Happy National Frog Jumping Day!
The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee is held the 3rd weekend in May. In the 1860s Mark Twain lived in a cabin south of Angel's Camp. Legend has it he overheard a story in a local tavern that inspired his short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.
Also known as The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, the story was first published in 1865 as Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog. The colorful tale brought Twain national recognition and became the anchor for his first published novel collection in 1867.
The current world's frog jumping record is held by Rosie the Ribeter. Gotta love that name! Set in 1986, Rosie jumped a whooping 21' 5 3/4."
And of course we have our own favorite jumping frogs-the Navy SEAL's parachute jumping team, The Leap Frogs.
